K-12 Outreach

Northern Illinois is home to almost 3,000 K-12 schools that serve both large population centers and rural areas. These schools fall into roughly 470 school districts. Combined, these schools have about 2,220 GWh of annual energy use with the average school using around 444,000 kWh of usage per year. The typical school could reduce energy usage and costs by an average of 25% if they implement energy efficiency improvements.

What We Do

As an outreach service provider for public sector schools in ComEd territory, MEEA is tasked with marketing and outreach to provide education to schools about energy efficiency programs and assistance with incentive applications.

Our Impact

In 2018, we had contact with a combined total of 1,208 schools representing 99 different school districts. This led to 212 school facility assessment requests and enabled our staff to attend 114 individual assessment review meetings. A total of 49 applications for incentives through ComEd programs were submitted which accounted for almost 1.6 million kWh of energy savings for the schools.
